What to Do After Sex to Conceive

1.     Lie Flat

Once you have had sex with your man, lie on your back for at least 30 minutes and let the sperm-rich juices flow to your womb with minimum resistance. When you lie on your back, the microscopic seeds have an easier time swimming towards the egg in your uterus or tubes. If you are wondering how to conceive fast, you can take solace by trying this method. Many women swear that this method has helped them to conceive easily.

2.     Relax

Stress will not help you get pregnant. In fact it reduces your chances besides other problems. During the time when you are working towards getting pregnant, forget any problems that you may be experiencing. Don’t even stress about your objective of getting pregnant. Focus instead on enjoying every moment of your life and your body will respond by providing a healthy environment for conception.

3.     Don't Run to the Bathroom

We’ve already agreed that you need to lie back for about thirty minutes after you have had sex. Now, don’t go to the bathroom before coming back to lie on your back. Wait for 20 to 30 minutes to increase your chances of getting pregnant. By avoiding peeing immediately after sex, you ensure that more sperms stay longer within your system. But go to the bathroom soon after this to reduce your chances of getting UTIs.

4.     Be in the Healthy Weight Range

If you are still wondering what to do after sex to conceive, the problem may be that you are either overweight or underweight, in which case it could be difficult to get pregnant. Find out what your ideal weight should be and work towards achieving it or at least getting as close to it as possible.

5.     Avoid the Vices

You are probably aware of the advice to keep away from alcohol and cigarettes when you are pregnant! The same advice is applicable when you are trying to conceive. Studies indicate that consumption beyond 500mg of caffeine per day decreases your fertility.

6.     Take a Prenatal Vitamin

It is important to eat a balanced diet to help you conceive. But looking for and using extra help will not hurt. Prenatal vitamins provide your body with sufficient folic acid and many essential nutrients to make your body ready for conception and support of a healthy baby. If you need further advice on supplements, consult your healthcare provider.

7.     Don't Overdo Strenuous Exercise

Of course, exercise is good for health. However, some studies indicate that if you exercise for more than five hours in one week, you might find it difficult to conceive. To increase your chances of getting pregnant, don’t keep wondering what to do after sex to conceive and slow down instead. You can always get back to your routine once you get your baby.

8.     Eat Healthy Foods

While there is no magic diet to help you conceive, a woman’s body requires a healthy diet for it to support a pregnancy. A healthy diet consists of a wide variety of foods that provide healthy carbohydrates, fats, protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals such as calcium and iron.

  • Develop a habit of eating lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grain, lean protein and healthy fats.
  • To increase your chances of conception, eat foods rich in folic acid such as dark green vegetables, broccoli, citrus fruits and beans.
  • Avoid or limit your intake of food items that may contain harmful substances such as mercury and other heavy metals. These include fish such as king mackerel, tilefish, swordfish and tuna.

More Ways to Boost Chances of Pregnancy

Besides the methods about what to do after sex to conceive, here are more ways to increase your chances of pregnancy.

1.     Have Frequent Sex

If you have considered saving up and having sex once in a long time, that’s no way to conceive. Experts say that although the sperm count may increase when a man does not have sex for a week, the quality of the sperm may be lower. Frequent sex increases the chances of conception. However, doing it daily may be too stressful for some people. Two days’ intervals between sexual intercourse have little effect on sperm quality and quantity. According to some experts, when you are trying to get pregnant, having sex every other day works as well as doing it every day.

2.     Choose Lubricants Wisely

If you need a vaginal lubricant when trying to conceive, be careful about the type that you use. Experts advise you to use natural oil based lubricants such as peanut oil, canola oil and baby oil. Water based lubricants including KY Jelly, Astroglide and Touch may decrease your chances of conception by inhibiting sperm movement by up to 60 to 100 percent. And by all means, avoid spermicidal products.

3.     Know the Fertile Window

The fertile window is a six-day period before and up to ovulation. By having sex within this fertile period, and especially within the three days prior to ovulation, you greatly increase your chance of getting pregnant. Couples don't need to wait until the expected day of ovulation, but rather to do it within the days leading to ovulation. Keep track of your cycle; ovulation happens around 14 days before the next menstrual flow.

4.     Avoid Pesticides and Other Harmful Exposures

Agricultural pesticides, besides other chemicals can harm fertility for both men and women. Avoid foods that may contain pesticides and chemicals that may compromise fertility, including dry-cleaning and printing chemicals.

5.     Drink More Water

Water is the basic component of body fluids, including the cervical mucus in which sperms swim to get to the ovum. When trying to get pregnant, drink water throughout the day to keep your body ready for conception.

6.     Check Your Medicine Cabinet

You can’t take chances with medications when you are trying to get pregnant. Medications such as hormonal preparations, tranquilizers, some asthma medications, anticonvulsive, antidepressants and NSAIDs may adversely affect your chances of conception. If you are on any medication and want to conceive, talk to your doctor for advice.

7.     Go Low on the Sweets

Experts say that too much sugar and sweet snacks lead to production of excess adrenaline hormone in your body. This may lead to a decrease in production of the female reproductive hormone, which effectively lowers your chances of conceiving. Cut down on the sweets for better results.
