Meal Plan for 1 Year Old Babies

Your baby would not have many teeth when she turns one, but she will be in a position to gum her food well. It means you can feed her a lot more things that you might think. At the stage, you should provide your baby with essential nutrients, such as vitamins, proteins, carbs, minerals, and fats, and you can get these nutrients from a variety of food. It is a good idea to work with your doctor or dietician to create a perfect meal plan for 1 year old. Let's find out how to proceed.

What to Feed Your One Year Old Baby

Even when you know you should feed your baby with nutritious food, you may still be a bit confused about what to include in a perfect meal plan. Here are a few recommendations:

Food Types

Examples

Dairy

Whole milk, cottage cheese, soft cheese (pasteurized), and full-fat yogurt

Grains

Pasta, whole-wheat bread, and rice

Iron-fortified Cereals

Barley, oats, mixed cereals, and wheat

Fruits

Papaya, melon, grapefruit, and apricot

Protein

Beans, eggs, boneless fish, poultry, and thinly spread peanut butter

Veggies

Cauliflower and broccoli (cooked well and soft)

Juice

Citrus and non-citrus

How Much to Feed

There is no strict rule about how much to feed your baby per day. There are general guidelines though. Ideally, you should at least give your baby 40 calories every day for every inch of height. It is perfectly fine if your little angle eats more or less than this.

However, you have to be more attentive and feed your baby only when she is hungry. Feeding her every half or one hour is not a great idea. This could lead to overfeeding that might make your child to vomit and have stomach pain. Avoid making your child to eat in return for some reward or incentive; do not punish her either for not eating enough. The best thing is to make a timetable and feed her at fixed times at fixed intervals.

Feeding Guideline for One Year Old Baby

It is not that difficult to make a meal plan for 1 year old baby because your little angel is going to eat a variety of foods at this stage. Here are a few basic feeding guidelines to keep in mind:

  • Be a bit careful when introducing something new because your baby may develop an allergic reaction to certain foods – she is more likely to develop food allergies if there is someone in your family already suffering from the same.
  • It is important that you do not give liquids to your baby right before meal times. Moreover, you should only be serving less than 24 oz. of milk every day – this helps ensure that your baby starts eating more of other food items.
  • Feed milk by cup instead of a bottle when your baby is one year old.
  • Do not give her snacks just before mealtimes – there should at least be a two hours gap between snacks and mealtimes.
  • Do not introduce too many food items at the same time. Give your baby one new food at a time to ensure that she accepts it.
  • Never give your baby chocolates, soft drinks, or anything that would make her addictive to it.

Along with keeping meal plan for 1 year old and the basic guidelines in mind, you should also keep a few tips in mind to prevent choking while feeding your little one. For instance:

  • Ensure that your baby is sitting in the right position while drinking or eating.
  • Ensure that she is taking small bites and taking time to chew the food well.
  • Grate or cook carrots and other hard veggies.
  • Cut fruits into smaller pieces and be sure to remove seeds, pits, and tough skins.
  • Be sure to remove bones from fish before serving.
  • Always cut round foods like cherry, tomatoes, grapes and hot dogs lengthwise and then serve.
  • Never feed your baby foods with skewers or toothpicks.

What's more, it is a good idea to avoid giving certain foods to your one-year-old baby. Some of the most common foods to avoid include raisins, fish with bones, whole peanuts, seeds, nuts, gum, marshmallows, hard candy, and large pieces of spinach or lettuce.
