How to Tell Your Parents You Got a Bad Grade

A bad grade is something very common for many people at some point of their life, and it does not reflect the person’s intelligence in any case. In most occasions, a bad grade can occur when you are distracted by any reason or you are under stress. There is nothing to worry about, and the world does not end here. The only thing left to do is to tell your parents about it. Here are some suggestions for you.

How to Tell Your Parents You Got a Bad Grade

1. Prepare

Do not freak out and do not even think about hiding your bad grade from your parents, as these will only make things worse eventually. Start thinking about how and when to tell your parents and to make you feel better, you can enjoy a walk or a bicycle ride while doing this.

2. Choose the Right Time

You may want to refrain from telling your parents the bad news if they are stressed or have just come home from work. Wait until dinner or schedule a moment with them and break the news in a calm environment. Do not make excuses to delay this moment any more than necessary, and it will be better if you tell your parents the same day you received the bad grade.

3. Be Respectful

How to tell your parents you got a bad grade? Under no circumstance should you raise your voice tone when you are talking to them. Remember that doing so will only make things worse. Approach your parents in a respectful manner, talk to them with appropriate words, and do not curse. Give your parents time to speak even if you think they are being unfair with you.

4. Be Honest

Give a deep thought into the reasons that lead you to this point and do not make excuses. Your parents will highly appreciate your maturity and honesty. Whether the reason is you did not study enough or had too much chores or other things to study, or you did not fully understand the subject, the most important thing is that you keep yourself honest with your parents and with yourself.

5. Put the Problem into Perspective

Remind your parents that you usually are a good student and it is not something common for you to fail in school. Reassure them that you are willing to do everything in your power to fix this mistake. If you are struggling in school, then this is a good time to let them know and ask for their help.

6. Make a Tangible Study Plan

Only words may not fully convince your parents, so you need to make a plan of study. For instance, plan to study 1 or 2 hours daily without any distractions; and if you are really struggling and do not understand the subject, you can improve your grades by taking some private lessons.

7. Listen to Your Parents

How to tell your parents you got a bad grade? Maybe you have told them, so what's the next thing to do?

When you are sure that you have thoroughly explained yourself and have let them know your plans to improve your future grades, let your parents freely speak to you without talking back to them. They may be angry and start lecturing you but you must listen to them. Remember that they want the best for you and if they think you are neglecting your school chores they will obviously start to worry about your future.

Avoid talking back since rudeness or acting disrespectfully will make your parents think that you are not taking the situation seriously. However, if you feel like you are being abused in a mental or physical way, then it might be a good idea to notify your teacher, a close relative or the authorities.

8. Suggest and Accept the Punishment They Give You

A good idea is to offer acceptable punishments that your parents can give you. You can ask them to take the television away for some days or avoid going to an important party and instead study that night inside your room. This way your parents will know your willingness to fix the bad grade.

You have to accept whatever punishment your parents might give you. Sometimes your parents may not like the suggestions you give to them so they may choose a completely different one according to what they think appropriate for you. You need to avoid any kind of argument or denial. Avoid sneaking out of the home, fighting against the punishment or outright disobeying them.

9. Improve Your Grade in the Future

How to tell your parents you got a bad grade? You already know the answer. Here are some tips for you to improve your grade in the future.

  • Make sure to take note of the important thing in class, and then re-read it at home after school. This is a very efficient method to improve your grade.
  • Start studying with anticipation for your tests and make your essays with enough time in advance. Avoid trying to do everything at last minute which is the main cause for failing.
  • If you are struggling in class or it seems difficult for you to comprehend a subject, then talk with your teacher and do not be afraid of asking questions.
  • Do not copy your classmates' assignments. If you do this, there is a chance that you can get caught and get a detention or worst, and you will not learn anything.
  • Join a study group. Sometimes you can better understand things explained by someone of your age in a more relaxed environment.
  • If you know you are having a hard time at school and are having bad grades, let your parents know. They can talk to your teacher or arrange for you to receive private lessons. Do not wait until it is too late.
