Sex Moves to Induce Labor

Babies are likely to be born between the 38th and 42nd week of pregnancy. If you are at this point and you want to speed up the process, you are open to any idea that comes your way. Many mothers have testified that sex brought about labor. Nonetheless, it is not medically proven that sex moves to induce labor works. Therefore, it is more of a myth than a scientific fact. It might get awkward for your partner having sex when he can clearly see the baby is about to pop out, but here is some insight on the relation between sex and labor.

Can Sex Moves Induce Labor?

Yes, sex is mostly recommended by midwives as a natural way of inducing labor. It is based on the theory that labor is induced by the woman’s orgasm. When a woman experiences an orgasm, the body releases oxytocin which is produced immediately when labor begins. Synthetic oxytocin called Pitocin is normally used in hospitals to induce labor.

Another reason why sex might bring about labor is that the body naturally contracts after climax. Labor can be induced by uterine contractions.

Last reason that sex moves to induce labor works is that, at the start of labor, prostaglandins hormone is produced. This hormone is contained in semen. The semen helps in ripening or softening the cervix so that it is ready to open when labor begins.

Note

If your water has broken, sex is not a good idea due to the risk of getting infections. If your placenta is low lying, or if you experience virginal bleeding, sex is not recommended.

Recommended Sex Positions to Induce Labor

Here are some sex moves to induce labor that you can try out. If you feel any pain or discomfort, stop immediately.

1. Spooning

Spooning is when penetration is done from behind while the couple is lying side by side. Spooning is a popular sex move for inducing labor along with the edge of bed method where the woman lies at the edge of the bed on her back and the man either kneels or stands to penetrate.

2. Doggy Style

Doggy style is one of the most popular sex moves to induce labor. It works for most mums and is recommended by midwives. Pile up pillows beneath your stomach and you are good to go. In this position, you can get deep penetration and the amount of semen that gets to the cervix is maximized. After ejaculation, maintain the position and raise your hips to ensure that the semen rests on the cervix.

3. The Flying V

To get into this position, lie on your back with our bum at the end of the bed such that your legs can hang off the bed from the waist down. Your partner should be between your legs and let your legs rest on his upper body. Make sure you communicate so that you are comfortable and experience pleasure all through.

4. Woman on Top

This position is not only easy, but also comfortable. When your partner is lying on his back, you are able to face him by sitting on him and you can maintain eye contact with your belly out of the way. You can also have control all through, moving in the direction that pleases you the most and getting your orgasm fast.

Other Natural Ways to Induce Labor

Apart from sex moves to induce labor, there are other ways that can help you. However, their effectiveness depends on the readiness of your body. Before you try any of them out, discuss with your gynecologist.

1. Try to Relax

If you are worried, tense or trying too hard to induce labor, it might be more difficult to begin. Instead, you should try all methods of relaxation like taking a warm bath, getting a professional massage and aromatherapy. You can also treat yourself to niceties like going out on a date to a new restaurant, going for ice cream or watching a movie.

2. Go for a Walk

If you are experiencing contraction, but you are not yet in labor, taking a walk always helps. The movements of the hips while walking get the baby in position to be born and standing upright lets gravity do its job by moving the baby towards the pelvis.

3. Take Herbs

Blue and black cohosh, evening primrose oil and castor oil can be used to induce labor. However, it is not advisable to go all out with the herbs as they can cause complications. It is always necessary to consult your doctor before deciding to use any of them.

4. Eat Spicy Food

Some mums believe that the extra hot enchilada from the Mexican restaurant can induce labor. Though there is not enough statistical data to support this, you can try it out and see if it works for you.

5. Eat Pineapple

Bromelain is an enzyme that is claimed to soften the cervix and stimulate muscle contractions. Bromelain is found in the stem of pineapples and the proteins it contains can stimulate chemical activities that lead to labor.

6. Stimulate Nipples

You can stimulate your nipples by massaging them or asking your partner to stimulate them gently. You can use a warm towel to do the same. By stimulating the nipples, the body produces the labor hormone, oxytocin, which brings about contractions before labor. But in some cases, it might lead to prolonged yet strong uterine contractions that might cause the baby’s heart rate to slow down. For this reason, doctors do not advocate for this method of inducing labor unless you are being monitored.
