Why Does My Vagina Itch After My Period?

Many women may feel their vagina itchy after period sometimes in life. But most of them are reluctant to talk to their doctor about this embarrassing problem. Sometimes, vaginal itch can become severe enough that it interferes with everyday living – definitely a good reason to go see the doctor.

Why Does My Vagina Itch After My Period?

Vaginal itch soon after a period has many potential causes. For most women, it might be caused by a change in hormones. As estrogen levels drop following a period, vaginal tissue can lose moisture and become irritated. So you may feel itchiness in vagina.

It might also be caused by irritants from period products. For example, sanitary pads may contain fragrances, dyes and other chemicals that irritate the vagina’s delicate skin. Try to use a menstrual cup or organic cotton products.

Sometimes, using pad overnight or for too long time can lead to vaginal itch. Never wear a sanitary product more than three to four hours at a time, as long-term use can foster bacterial and yeast growth.

Your underwear can also be the culprit. If you believe this might answer the question of "why does my vagina itch after my period", make sure not to wear underwear made of synthetic fibers. Cotton underwear is best, and if possible, not wearing any underwear and loose-fitting clothing are ideal. This allows your vagina to air out.

Some medical conditions can explain why the vagina might itch after your period.

1.   Bacteria Vaginosis

Sometimes vaginal bacteria become unbalanced. Symptoms include an itchy vagina, watery discharge, a different color of discharge, an odor that’s stronger than normal (especially after intercourse), or an unpleasant odor.

In most cases, this disease can cure on its own in several days. You can eat foods that contain rich probiotics such as yogurt. If this problem doesn't clear by itself, be sure to see your OB.

2.   Yeast Infection

The itchy feeling is caused when the fungus, Candida albicans, starts to grow. Signs of a possible yeast infection include a burning sensation during intercourse or urination, rash or a white discharge that looks like cottage cheese. Yeast infections can be caused by an increase in stress, hormonal changes or antibiotic use.

Try the OTC medications to start. Also eat probiotics-rich foods. Go to see the doctor when the symptoms don't subside.

3.   Reactions or Allergies

One of the things you should consider when asking yourself “why does my vagina itch after my period” is whether you have been exposed to any new substances or chemicals. Just like any other part of your body, your vagina can have a reaction to certain chemicals or substances. Examples include using a new laundry detergent or a new shower soap and shampoo.

Consult your doctor whether the itchiness is caused by allergy. If so, stop using the substances immediately. Change the detergent, soap or shampoo to more skin-friendly ones.

4.   STDs

Sexually transmitted diseases, such as Chlamydia, herpes and gonorrhea, are probably the most dreaded causes of vaginal itch. If you have engaged in high-risk sexual behaviors (such as having multiple partners or not using protection), there’s a chance your itchy vagina is caused by an STD. If an STD is a possibility, a trip to the doctor is a must!

Natural Remedies to Stop Vagina Itch

Why does my vagina itch after my period? It has been answered. Keep reading to find a few natural remedies to help reduce the discomfort or get rid of itch altogether.

1.   Cold Water

Rinsing your vagina and surrounding area with cold water will reduce the heat in the vaginal area, which in turn can reduce the itchiness. If using this method, never spray water directly into the vagina.

2.   Yogurt

The active cultures in plain, unsweetened yogurt can help fight off infection and promote the growth of good bacteria. To start, coat a new tampon with yogurt. Then insert the tampon into your vagina and keep it there for a couple of hours. Doing this twice a day should produce noticeable results within a week.

3.   Apple Cider Vinegar

This works due to its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties, as well as restoration of the pH balance of your vagina. To use this method, take 2 tablespoons of unfiltered and raw apple cider vinegar and mix it into 8 ounces of warm water. Use this solution to rinse your vagina twice a day for several days.

4.   Garlic

Take advantage of the antibacterial properties by mixing a few drops of garlic oil with a teaspoon of vitamin E. Using a clean cloth, apply this mixture to your vagina in the itchy areas. Let it sit for 10 minutes, and then rinse with clean warm water.

5.   Salt Water Bath

Salt inhibits bacterial growth. Mix two tablespoons of salt into 16 ounces of warm water. Once the salt is dissolved, rinse your vagina around the itchy areas. Alternatively, you can dissolve 2/3 cup of salt into a typical bathtub, and then squat in the bathtub for 15 minutes.
